The purpose of an Emotional Release Technique is to release trapped energy and emotions, and like a lot of the energy tools, there are probably as many different types of Emotional Release Techniques as there are practitioners who use them. And taking this one step further, once a practitioner has become familiar with using Emotional Release Technique, they’ll probably adjust the technique according to each individual and individual circumstance.
The Emotional Release Technique I use uses the Heart Center as the focus of the emotional release.
Research at the Institute of HeartMath shows that along with being communicated from the brain, “information pertaining to a person’s emotional state is also communicated throughout the body via the heart’s electromagnetic field” and “compared to the electromagnetic field produced by the brain, the electrical component of the heart’s field is about 60 times greater in amplitude, and permeates every cell in the body.”
What this means to me is that our heart stores emotions, and because our emotions are stored in our heart, it only makes sense that they can be released through our heart as well.
And this is what we do with the Emotional Release Technique. Through the Heart Center, we release trapped emotions and energy, from simple everyday frustrations to deeper traumas, and because we are working specifically with the emotions, we can do this release work without having to relive the experience of how the emotions came to be.
When I’m working with a client who has been deeply traumatized, I will often begin with the Emotional Release Technique and allow my client to release some of the trapped energy before we begin getting into more specific aspects of the trauma.
I also find this technique to be helpful when working with clients who are dealing with so many conflicting emotions that we can’t get anything specific to come up to be worked on. These clients usually show up just feeling stuck all over and can’t figure out why, but once we’ve been able to lighten the load a bit, through using the Emotional Release Technique, we can begin unraveling everything else and getting them unstuck.
